Quick answer: Most phones that will not charge have one of four problems: a bad cable or charger, lint packed into the charging port, a safety feature that has paused charging (moisture, heat or a charging limit), or a worn-out port or battery. Try a different cable and charger first, then look in the port with a flashlight. If it still will not charge, our phone repair in Eagan shop can find the cause for free and usually fix it the same day.
Key takeaways
- Always test with a second cable, charger and outlet before anything else. Cheap or frayed cables are the number one cause.
- Pocket lint builds up in the port over months and stops the plug from seating fully. Clean it with a wooden toothpick, never metal.
- “Moisture detected” (Samsung, Pixel) and “Liquid detected” (iPhone) warnings mean the phone is protecting itself. Dry it; do not force-charge it.
- If the phone only charges at an angle, the port is worn or damaged. That is a quick repair: iPhone charging ports cost $119 to $220 at our Eagan shop, Samsung Galaxy ports $138 to $143.

What “Not Charging” Looks Like, and What It Usually Means
| Symptom | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| No charging icon at all, on any cable | Blocked or damaged port, dead battery, or charging circuit fault |
| Charges only with the cable held at an angle | Lint in the port or a worn port |
| Charges very slowly | Low-power charger, damaged cable, hot phone, or background drain |
| Stops at 80% or 85% | A charging limit or optimized charging setting, not a fault |
| Starts, then stops and starts again | Loose connection, damaged cable or a failing port |
| “Moisture detected” or “Liquid detected” warning | Water or sweat in the port, or corrosion |
| “Accessory may not be supported” | Damaged or uncertified cable, or dirty port contacts |
| Phone is dead and shows nothing when plugged in | Fully drained battery (wait 30 minutes), or a battery or board fault |

9 Fixes to Try at Home
1. Try a different cable
Cables fail near the plug ends, often with no visible damage. Borrow a cable you know works with the same type of phone. If your phone charges with it, replace yours.
2. Try a different charger and outlet
Power strips, car chargers and laptop USB ports can supply too little power. Plug a known-good wall charger directly into a wall outlet.
3. Clean the charging port
Turn the phone off and shine a flashlight into the port. If you see gray fluff or dirt, gently scrape it out with a wooden or plastic toothpick, working along the sides, not the center pins. A few short bursts of compressed air (can held upright) help. Do not use metal pins, paper clips, water or cleaning liquids, and do not blow into the port, because breath adds moisture. You would be surprised how much lint comes out of a port that has been in a pocket for a year.
4. Restart the phone
A software glitch can stop the phone from recognizing the charger. Restart it, then plug it in again.
5. Let it cool down
Phones pause charging when they get too hot (in the sun, in a car, while gaming or navigating). Take it out of the case, move it somewhere cool and try again in 15 minutes. If your phone gets hot often, read why is my phone hot.
6. Dry the port if it is wet
If you see a moisture or liquid warning, unplug the cable, tap the phone gently with the port facing down and leave it in a dry place with good airflow for a few hours. Our guide on how to get water out of a charging port walks through it step by step. Skip the rice.
7. Check your charging limit settings
If your phone stops at 80% or 85%, it is probably a feature, not a fault. On iPhone, check Settings > Battery > Charging (Optimized Battery Charging or a charging limit). On Samsung, look under Settings > Battery > Battery protection. On Pixel, check Settings > Battery for charging optimization or Adaptive Charging.
8. Update the software
Install the latest iOS or Android update. Updates sometimes fix charging bugs and improve battery management.
9. Leave a “dead” phone on the charger for 30 minutes
A completely drained battery can take a while before the phone shows any sign of life. Leave it on a known-good wall charger for 30 minutes, then try to turn it on. If nothing happens, see why won’t my phone turn on.
On-Screen Charging Messages Explained
| Message | Phone | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector” or “Liquid detected in USB-C connector” | iPhone | Unplug, dry the phone for a few hours. Use Emergency Override only in a real emergency. |
| “Moisture has been detected in your charger/USB port” | Samsung Galaxy | Unplug and let it dry. If the warning stays when the phone is dry, the port may be corroded. |
| “Charging on hold” or “Charging paused” | iPhone | The phone is too hot, or optimized charging is holding at 80%. Let it cool or wait. |
| “This accessory may not be supported” | iPhone | Try a certified cable and clean the port. |
| “Charging slowly” or “Connect a different charger” | Samsung, Pixel | Use the charger that came with your phone or a fast charger rated for it. |
| “Connected, not charging” | Android | Low-power source, damaged cable or a port fault. |
iPhone Not Charging: Extra Checks
iPhone 15 and newer use a USB-C port; iPhone 14 and older use Lightning. Both collect lint the same way. On an iPhone, also check Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If Maximum Capacity is low or you see a “Service” message, the battery may be the problem rather than the port; here is how to check iPhone battery health. If your iPhone charges wirelessly but not with a cable, the port is almost always the cause. Our iPhone charging port repair in Eagan is usually done the same day, and our iPhone repair in Eagan page covers every other iPhone repair we do.
Samsung and Google Pixel Not Charging: Extra Checks
- Boot into Safe Mode. If the phone charges normally in Safe Mode, a third-party app is interfering. Remove recently installed apps one by one.
- Check Battery protection. Samsung’s Battery protection can stop charging at 80% or 85% on purpose.
- Turn Fast Charging off and on (Samsung: Settings > Battery > More battery settings). A mismatched fast charger can cause stop-start charging.
- Watch for moisture warnings after a workout. Sweat can trigger them, and repeated moisture leads to corrosion.

Wireless Charging Not Working
Remove thick or metal cases, magnetic wallets and cards, and center the phone on the pad. A pad needs a proper wall adapter to work. If wireless charging works but cable charging does not, the charging port is the problem. If neither works, the battery or the charging circuit on the board is more likely, and a technician needs to test it.

How to Keep Your Charging Port Healthy
- Check and clean the port every few months if you carry the phone in a pocket.
- Plug and unplug straight in and out, not at an angle.
- Do not charge while the phone is wet or sweaty.
- Replace frayed cables before they damage the port.
- Use a case with a port cover if you work outdoors or in dusty places.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my phone plugged in but not charging?
The most common causes are a faulty cable or charger, lint blocking the charging port, a hot phone that has paused charging, or moisture in the port. Try another cable and charger, clean the port with a wooden toothpick and let the phone cool down.
How do I clean my phone’s charging port safely?
Turn the phone off, shine a flashlight into the port and gently scrape out lint with a wooden or plastic toothpick along the sides. Finish with short bursts of compressed air. Never use metal objects, liquids or your breath.
Why does my phone only charge at a certain angle?
Usually because lint is stopping the plug from seating fully, or because the port is worn or loose. Clean the port first. If it still only charges at an angle, the charging port needs to be repaired or replaced.
Why does my phone stop charging at 80%?
It is usually a battery-saving feature, not a fault: Optimized Battery Charging or a charging limit on iPhone, Battery protection on Samsung, or charging optimization on Pixel. You can change these in the battery settings.
How much does a charging port repair cost in Eagan?
At Helpertech in Eagan, iPhone charging port repair costs $119 to $220 depending on the model, and Samsung Galaxy S-series charging ports cost $138 to $143. Every repair has a 90-day warranty and the diagnosis is free with any repair.
Is it the battery or the charging port?
If the phone charges wirelessly but not with a cable, it is almost always the port. If it will not charge wirelessly or with a cable, or it dies quickly after charging, the battery or charging circuit is more likely. A free diagnosis with any repair will tell you for sure.
