Samsung Screen Flickering or Green Line? Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost

Samsung screen flickering or green line: causes and fixes

Quick answer: Samsung screen flickering is often caused by software or display settings (adaptive brightness, low brightness, a buggy update or app) and can usually be fixed with a restart, an update or a few settings changes. A green, pink or white line that stays in the same place is different: it is a hardware fault in the OLED panel, and the fix is a new screen. If your Galaxy is still covered, ask Samsung first. Otherwise, our cell phone repair shop in Eagan tests Galaxy screens for free and replaces most the same day.

Key takeaways

  • Take a screenshot. If the flicker or line does not show in the screenshot, it is in the display hardware.
  • Flicker that disappears in Safe Mode is caused by an app, not the screen.
  • Green lines have been widely reported on several Galaxy S models, often appearing after a software update. In some countries Samsung has offered free one-time screen replacements for affected phones, so contact Samsung before paying for a repair.
  • Galaxy S20 to S25 screen replacement at our Eagan shop costs $240 to $400 depending on the model.

How to Fix Samsung Screen Flickering (9 Steps)

  1. Force restart. Hold the Side button and Volume Down together for about 10 seconds until the phone restarts.
  2. Take a screenshot while it is flickering. If the flicker is not in the screenshot, it is a display hardware problem.
  3. Turn off Adaptive brightness (Settings > Display) and set brightness manually. Constant auto-adjusting can look like flicker.
  4. Change Motion smoothness (Settings > Display > Motion smoothness). Switch between Adaptive and Standard; some flicker issues come from refresh rate changes.
  5. Turn off Eye comfort shield and Extra dim to rule them out.
  6. Update the software (Settings > Software update) and update your apps in the Galaxy Store and Play Store. Samsung often fixes display bugs in later updates.
  7. Boot into Safe Mode. Turn the phone off, turn it on, and when the Samsung logo appears hold Volume Down, or use the power menu and long-press Power off. If the flicker stops in Safe Mode, remove recently installed apps one at a time.
  8. Run the display test in the Samsung Members app (Support > Phone diagnostics), which can check the screen and touch.
  9. Back up your phone before anything else if the flicker is getting worse. A failing display can go black without warning.

Avoid a factory reset unless everything else has failed and your data is backed up. It rarely fixes a hardware display fault.

The Samsung Green Line Problem

A thin green line running from the top to the bottom of the screen is one of the most reported Galaxy screen problems. It has shown up on several generations of the Galaxy S series, and many owners say it appeared right after a One UI update or after the phone overheated while updating. In 2026, Android Authority reported a new wave of green-line reports on the Galaxy S23 and S23 Ultra after the One UI 8.5 update.

Even when it appears after an update, a green line is a hardware fault in the OLED panel, usually in the tiny connections that drive one column of pixels. That is why restarts, updates and resets do not remove it. Some owners also see a pink or purple line, or a line that starts thin and gets wider.

What to do about a green line

  1. Back up your phone. The line is not dangerous, but the screen can get worse.
  2. Contact Samsung support and ask whether your model is eligible for a free screen replacement. Samsung has offered one-time free replacements for green-line screens in some countries for certain models and ages, and it is worth asking even if you are out of warranty.
  3. If Samsung will not cover it, a screen replacement fixes it permanently. We use Galaxy screens that match your model, and the repair keeps your data on the phone.

Pink, Purple, White and Black Lines

Other colored lines usually have the same cause as the green line: damage inside the OLED panel. Black lines or a black patch that spreads usually mean the panel is cracked internally, often after a drop, or that liquid got behind the screen. A screen that shows lines only when you press on it points to a loose display connector, which a technician can sometimes reseat without a new screen. For iPhones with the same symptoms, see lines on an iPhone screen.

Samsung Black Screen but the Phone Is On

If the screen stays black but the phone rings, vibrates or makes the charging sound, the phone is working and the display has failed. Try a force restart first. If the screen stays black, the fix is a screen replacement, and your photos and data will still be there when it is done. If the phone shows no signs of life at all, see why won’t my phone turn on.

Will Samsung Fix It for Free?

Samsung’s standard one-year warranty covers manufacturing defects, which can include a display that develops lines without any damage. It does not cover drops, cracks or liquid damage. Samsung Care+ adds accidental damage coverage with a deductible. For green lines specifically, contact Samsung and describe exactly when the line appeared; if your phone qualifies for a free or discounted replacement, that is the cheapest option. If not, a local repair is usually faster than mailing the phone in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Samsung screen flickering?

Flicker is often caused by adaptive brightness, low brightness levels, a refresh rate setting, a buggy update or an app. Restart the phone, turn off Adaptive brightness, update the software and test in Safe Mode. If it flickers everywhere and does not show in screenshots, the display hardware is the problem.

Can a green line on a Samsung screen be fixed?

Yes, by replacing the screen. A green line is a hardware fault in the OLED panel, so software updates and resets do not remove it. Contact Samsung first to ask whether your phone qualifies for a free replacement; otherwise a local shop can replace the screen, usually the same day.

Did a software update cause the green line on my Samsung?

Many owners report the line appearing right after an update, and in 2026 there were widespread reports on the Galaxy S23 and S23 Ultra after One UI 8.5. The line itself is a panel hardware fault, and it does not go away with another update.

Will Samsung replace my screen for a green line for free?

It depends on your model, country, warranty and the phone’s condition. Samsung has offered one-time free replacements for green-line screens in some regions. Call Samsung support with your model and purchase date before paying for a repair.

How much does it cost to fix a Samsung screen in Eagan?

At Helpertech in Eagan, Galaxy S20 to S25 screen replacements cost $240 to $400 depending on the model. The screen test is free, and every repair includes a 90-day warranty.

Is it safe to keep using a Samsung phone with a green line?

Yes. A green line is not dangerous and does not damage the rest of the phone. It can get wider or be joined by more lines over time, so back up your phone and plan a repair when it becomes annoying.
