Key takeaways
- Galaxy S-series batteries are glued in behind the back glass, so replacing one means removing and resealing the back. That is why a DIY swap is riskier than it looks.
- A free battery test tells you whether you need a new battery or just different settings.
- Swelling is the one sign you should never ignore: stop charging and bring it in.
- If your phone is under Samsung’s warranty or a Samsung Care+ plan, check what it covers before paying.

7 Signs Your Samsung Battery Needs Replacing
- The phone shuts off with charge left, often at 15% to 30%, or in the cold.
- You charge more than once a day with the same use as before.
- The percentage drops in jumps, for example from 40% to 10% in a few minutes.
- The phone gets hot while charging or during light use. See why is my phone hot.
- The back glass is lifting or bulging, or the screen is pushed up at one edge. That is a swollen battery. Stop charging it.
- It takes much longer to charge, or charges only to a certain level.
- The phone feels slow and apps close unexpectedly, even after a restart.
If the battery drains fast but none of the other signs apply, try the settings in our guide on why your phone battery drains so fast first.
How to Check Battery Health on a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung Members app (any Galaxy)
- Open the Samsung Members app (preinstalled on most Galaxy phones, or free in the Galaxy Store).
- Tap Support, then Phone diagnostics.
- Tap Battery status. The result shows the battery’s condition, such as “Good”, along with its estimated life.
Settings (newer One UI versions)
On newer Galaxy phones, you may also find battery details in Settings > Battery, or under Settings > About phone > Status information, depending on your model and One UI version. Samsung has been adding more battery information in recent updates.
Battery protection setting
If your phone always stops at 80% or 85%, that is Battery protection (Settings > Battery > Battery protection), not a fault. It limits charging to extend battery life.
Is It Really the Battery? Battery vs. Charging Port vs. Board
| Symptom | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Drains fast, shuts off at 20% to 30%, gets warm | Worn battery |
| Only charges at an angle, or “Moisture detected” when dry | Charging port (lint, wear or corrosion) |
| Charges wirelessly but not with a cable | Charging port |
| Will not charge with a cable or wirelessly | Battery or the charging circuit on the board |
| Back glass bulging or screen lifting | Swollen battery (replace now) |
| Drains fast only after an update | Software; usually settles within a few days |
This is why we test before we quote. A $143 charging port repair and a $147 battery replacement fix very different problems, and we would rather you pay for the right one. If the port is the problem, see moisture and water in the charging port.
Why Galaxy Batteries Wear Out
Every lithium-ion battery loses capacity with each charge cycle. Heat speeds that up more than anything else, and Galaxy phones get hot during fast charging, wireless charging, gaming and long video calls. Keeping the battery at 100% for hours, and running it down to 0% often, also adds wear. Most people notice the change after two to three years; heavy users sooner. Features like Battery protection and adaptive charging slow the process down but do not stop it.
Samsung Service vs. a Local Shop vs. DIY
| Option | What to expect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung warranty or Samsung Care+ | A battery defect in the first year is covered by Samsung’s standard warranty. Samsung Care+ plans vary, so check your plan for battery coverage. | Newer phones still under warranty or a plan |
| Samsung authorized service | Genuine Samsung parts, usually by appointment or mail-in. | People who want only Samsung-authorized repairs |
| Local shop (Helpertech Eagan) | Walk-in, free battery test, clear price, most repairs same day, 90-day warranty. | Out-of-warranty Galaxy phones and anyone who needs the phone back today |
| DIY kit | Cheapest parts, but you must heat and remove glued back glass, disconnect the battery and pry out a glued battery. A punctured lithium battery can catch fire. | Experienced hobbyists only |
What Happens During a Galaxy Battery Replacement
- Free test. We check the battery’s condition and look for swelling, heat or a charging port problem that can look like a battery problem.
- Quote. You get the price before any work.
- Back glass removal. The back is gently heated and lifted.
- Battery swap. The old battery is disconnected and removed and the new one fitted.
- Reseal and test. The back is resealed with new adhesive, and we test charging, wireless charging and the battery before you leave.
Your photos, apps and data stay on the phone. Note that no repair shop, including Samsung, can restore the phone’s original water-resistance rating with complete certainty after the back has been opened, so keep it away from water.
How to Make Your New Battery Last
- Turn on Battery protection to limit charging to 80% or 85% if you charge overnight.
- Avoid heat: do not charge in direct sun or under a pillow, and take thick cases off while fast charging.
- Use a good-quality charger rated for your phone.
- Keep One UI and your apps updated.
- Turn on Put unused apps to sleep (Settings > Battery > Background usage limits).
Galaxy A, Z Fold, Z Flip and Older Models
We also work on Galaxy A-series phones, foldables and older Galaxy S and Note models. Prices vary more for these, so call 651-427-9087 with your model for a free quote. If your Galaxy will not charge at all, the charging port may be the problem rather than the battery; see why won’t my phone charge.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to replace a Samsung battery?
At Helpertech in Eagan, a Samsung Galaxy battery replacement costs $142 for the S20 and S21 series and $147 for the S22, S23, S24 and S25 series, including Plus, Ultra and FE models. Every replacement includes a free battery test and a 90-day warranty.
How long does a Samsung battery replacement take?
Most Galaxy S-series battery replacements at our Eagan shop are done the same day. The back glass has to be heated, removed and resealed, so it takes a little longer than an iPhone battery swap.
How do I check my Samsung battery health?
Open the Samsung Members app, tap Support, then Phone diagnostics, then Battery status. Newer Galaxy phones may also show battery details in Settings under Battery or About phone, depending on the model and One UI version.
Is it worth replacing the battery on a Samsung Galaxy?
Usually, yes, if the rest of the phone works well. A new battery for $142 to $147 can give a two to four year old Galaxy a full day of battery life again, which costs far less than a new phone.
Will replacing the battery erase my Samsung phone?
No. A battery replacement does not erase your data. Your photos, apps and messages stay on the phone. It is still a good idea to back up before any repair.
Is a swollen Samsung battery dangerous?
It can be. A swollen battery can push the back glass or screen out and can overheat. Stop charging the phone, keep it away from anything flammable and bring it in to have the battery replaced safely.
