How to Get Water Out of Your Phone’s Charging Port (Safely)

How to get water out of a phone charging port safely

Quick answer: Unplug everything, turn the phone off if you can, and gently tap it against your palm with the charging port facing down to let the water drip out. Then leave it in a dry place with some airflow for at least 30 minutes, and up to a day, before you charge it again. Do not use rice, a hair dryer, compressed air or cotton swabs. If the “liquid detected” or “moisture detected” warning keeps coming back when the phone is dry, the port may be corroded; our phone repair shop in Eagan can clean or replace it, usually the same day.

Key takeaways

  • The warning is your phone protecting itself. Charging a wet port can corrode the pins and damage the charging circuit.
  • Gravity and air do the work. Tapping, then air drying, is what Apple and Samsung both recommend.
  • Rice does not dry the port faster, and dust or grains can get stuck inside.
  • Salt water, pool water and drinks are worse than tap water because they leave residue. Rinse-type spills need a professional cleaning.

Why Your Phone Says “Liquid Detected” or “Moisture Detected”

Modern iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones can sense moisture on the pins in the charging port. When they do, they block or pause wired charging and show a warning. The reason is simple: electricity plus water on those tiny pins causes corrosion within hours or days, and corrosion can ruin the port or the charging chip on the board. The warning often appears after rain, a shower, a sweaty workout, a drink spill or snow melting in your pocket, which is common in Minnesota winters.

How to Get Water Out of a Charging Port: 6 Steps

  1. Unplug the cable and any accessories. Do not keep trying to charge.
  2. Turn the phone off if it got more than a few drops. This protects the board if water went further inside.
  3. Tap it gently. Hold the phone with the charging port facing down and tap it lightly against the palm of your hand several times to shake out water.
  4. Wipe the outside. Dry the phone and the area around the port with a lint-free cloth. Do not push anything into the port.
  5. Air dry. Leave the phone port-down, or on its side, in a dry place with some airflow, such as near (not in front of) a fan. Take it out of the case.
  6. Try again after 30 minutes. If the warning comes back, wait longer. It can take up to 24 hours for all the moisture to evaporate.

While you wait, you can usually still charge with a wireless charger if your phone supports it. Wireless charging does not use the port.

What Not to Do

  • Do not use rice. It is no faster than air drying, and rice dust or grains can get into the port.
  • Do not use a hair dryer, oven or radiator. Heat can damage the battery, screen adhesives and seals.
  • Do not blow compressed air into a wet port. It can push water deeper into the phone. (Compressed air is fine for lint when the port is dry.)
  • Do not insert cotton swabs, paper towels or tissue. Fibers stay behind and can bend the pins.
  • Do not charge it over the warning unless it is a real emergency.
  • Do not use “water eject” sounds or apps for the port. Those play a tone to push water out of the speaker grille; they do not dry the charging port.

iPhone: “Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector” and Emergency Override

On an iPhone, the alert says “Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector” (iPhone 14 and older) or refers to the USB-C connector (iPhone 15 and newer). The alert may offer an Emergency Override option that lets you charge anyway. Only use it if you truly need the phone right now, because charging a wet port is exactly how corrosion starts. If the alert appears when you know the phone is dry, clean the port for lint, try a different cable and restart the phone. If it keeps appearing, the port or cable may be corroded. Our iPhone charging port repair in Eagan fixes that, and our main iPhone repair in Eagan page lists every iPhone repair we do.

Samsung and Pixel: “Moisture Detected”

Samsung Galaxy phones show “Moisture has been detected in your charger/USB port” and block wired charging until the port is dry. Pixel phones show a similar alert. The steps are the same: unplug, shake gently, wipe and air dry. If the warning stays for more than a day, or appears when the phone is clearly dry, try restarting the phone and clearing the USB settings cache (on Samsung: Settings > Apps > show system apps > USB Settings > Storage > Clear cache, where available). A warning that never clears usually means corrosion or damage in the port. We repair Galaxy and Pixel charging ports at our Samsung repair shop in Eagan.

How Long to Wait Before Charging

Situation How long to wait
A few drops of rain or sweat 30 minutes to 2 hours
Phone was splashed or briefly dropped in clean water Several hours, up to 24 hours
Salt water, pool water, soda, coffee or other drinks Do not wait: rinse is not enough. Get a professional cleaning within a day
Warning keeps coming back after 24 hours Get the port checked for corrosion

If the Whole Phone Got Wet

A wet port is one thing. A phone that went into a lake, a toilet or a washing machine is another. Water-resistance ratings (such as IP68) are tested in fresh water in a lab, they weaken as phones age or after a drop, and they do not cover damage. If the whole phone got wet: turn it off immediately, do not charge it, do not press buttons to “test” it, dry the outside and bring it in within a day or two. Signs that water got inside include a foggy camera, a speaker that sounds muffled, lines or spots on the screen and touch problems. Our water damage repair in Eagan opens the phone, cleans corrosion off the board and replaces only what failed. For an iPhone-specific checklist, read dropped your iPhone in water.

When the Warning Will Not Go Away

If you have dried the phone for a full day and the warning still appears, or the phone will not charge at all, it is time for a technician. The pins in the port may be corroded (you may see green, white or dark residue with a flashlight), or water may have damaged the charging circuit. We clean the port professionally first, which often fixes it. If not, we replace the port.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get water out of my phone’s charging port fast?

Unplug everything, hold the phone with the port facing down and tap it gently against your palm, then leave it in a dry spot with some airflow. Try charging again after 30 minutes. There is no safe way to speed it up with heat or compressed air.

Does putting a phone in rice help?

No. Rice does not dry the port faster than open air, and rice dust or grains can get stuck in the port. Apple specifically advises against it.

How long does it take for a charging port to dry?

Usually 30 minutes to a few hours for a few drops. After a splash or a quick dunk it can take up to 24 hours. If the warning is still there after a day, get the port checked for corrosion.

Is it safe to use Emergency Override on my iPhone?

Only in a real emergency. Emergency Override lets you charge with liquid in the port, which can corrode the pins and damage the charging circuit. Waiting for the port to dry is always the safer choice.

Why does my phone say moisture detected when it is dry?

Corrosion, lint or a damaged cable can trigger the warning even when the port is dry. Clean the port gently, try another cable and restart the phone. If the warning keeps appearing, the port likely needs a professional cleaning or replacement.

Can I charge my phone wirelessly if the port is wet?

Yes, if your phone supports wireless charging. Wireless charging does not use the port, so it is a safe way to keep the phone powered while the port dries.
