Quick answer: A bright spot on an iPhone screen is almost always a hardware problem inside the display. Pressure (a back pocket, a tight bag, a drop) dents the thin light-spreading films behind the screen, so light pools in one place and that area glows. It will not fix itself, a software reset will not remove it, and the only lasting fix is a new screen. If you are near Eagan, our iPhone repair in Eagan shop can check it for free and usually replace the screen the same day.
Key takeaways
- Take a screenshot of the area. If the spot does not show up in the screenshot, it is in the screen hardware, not iOS.
- LCD iPhones (XR, 11, SE 2nd/3rd gen, 8 and older) get classic pressure bright spots. OLED iPhones (X and newer, including every iPhone 12 through 17) show bright or dim patches from panel damage or burn-in instead.
- A bright spot that appears together with a lifting screen or a bulging back can mean a swollen battery. Stop charging it and get it checked.
- Screen replacement at our Eagan shop runs from about $120 (iPhone 11) to $365 (iPhone 17 Pro Max), with a 90-day warranty.

What a Bright Spot Looks Like (and What It Isn’t)
A bright spot is a patch of the screen that looks lighter, whiter or “glowing” compared with everything around it. It is easiest to see on a dark or gray background at high brightness: open a black image, turn brightness all the way up and tilt the phone slightly. It can be a single soft dot, a cloudy patch the size of a fingertip, or a few spots in a row. The edges are usually blurry, not sharp.
Several other problems look similar at first glance. Telling them apart matters, because some take ten seconds to fix and others need a new screen:
| What you see | Most likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Soft, blurry glowing patch, most visible on dark backgrounds | Pressure damage to the backlight films (LCD models) | Screen replacement |
| A tiny, sharp dot stuck on one color (red, green, blue or white) | Stuck pixel | Sometimes clears with a restart or on its own; otherwise screen replacement |
| A tiny black dot that never lights up | Dead pixel | Screen replacement if it bothers you |
| A gray or white circle you can drag around | AssistiveTouch button (a software feature) | Turn off AssistiveTouch in Settings |
| A bright or cloudy area that changes when you peel the protector back | Dust, an air bubble or a cracked screen protector | Clean or replace the protector |
| Faint “ghost” of the keyboard or status bar, dim or bright patches | OLED burn-in (uneven pixel wear) | Screen replacement |
| Glow along the edges or corners | Backlight bleed or a screen lifting from the frame | Check the battery; screen replacement |
| Colored or black lines across the display | Loose or damaged display connection or panel | See our guide to lines on an iPhone screen |
Does Your iPhone Have an LCD or OLED Screen?
This is the single most useful thing to know, because the two screen types fail in different ways. An LCD screen makes light with a backlight behind the pixels. That light passes through a stack of thin diffuser and reflector films that spread it evenly. Dent those films and you get a bright spot. An OLED screen has no backlight at all: every pixel makes its own light. OLED iPhones do not get classic backlight bright spots, but they can show bright or dim blotches when the panel is cracked internally, pressed hard, or worn unevenly (burn-in).
| Screen type | iPhone models |
|---|---|
| LCD (backlit) | iPhone 11, iPhone XR, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), iPhone 8 / 8 Plus and older |
| OLED (no backlight) | iPhone X, XS, XS Max, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, every iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 model, iPhone 16e, iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 series |

7 Causes of Bright Spots on an iPhone Screen
1. Pressure damage (the most common cause)
Sitting down with your iPhone in a back pocket, carrying it in a packed bag next to keys or a charger brick, or resting something heavy on it can press the screen inward. The glass usually survives, but the soft films behind the LCD get a permanent dent. This is why many people find a bright spot “out of nowhere” with no crack at all. It is by far the most common cause we see on iPhone 11 and XR screens.
2. A drop or impact
A drop onto a corner or a hard edge sends a shock wave through the display. On LCD models it can dent the films the same way pressure does. On OLED models it can damage the panel beneath intact glass, which shows up as a bright blotch, a dark blotch, a green tint or lines. If your phone was recently dropped, our guide on what to do in the first hour after a drop walks you through what to check.
3. A swollen battery pushing on the screen
Lithium-ion batteries can swell as they age or after heat damage. A swelling battery pushes the display up from behind, which creates a pressure bright spot, often in the middle or lower half of the screen. Other warning signs are a screen that is lifting away from the frame, a gap along one edge, a back that rocks when you lay the phone flat, or a phone that suddenly runs hot. You can check your battery’s condition in a minute with our guide on how to check iPhone battery health, but a physically swollen battery needs a technician, not a settings check.
4. Heat
Leaving an iPhone on a car dashboard in summer, charging under a pillow or running it hot for long periods can warp the films and adhesives inside an LCD. The result can be a cloudy bright patch or uneven brightness. Heat also speeds up battery swelling, which leads back to cause number 3.
5. OLED burn-in or uneven wear
On OLED iPhones, pixels that show the same bright content for many hours (a navigation bar, a keyboard, a game HUD) age faster than the rest. That uneven wear can look like a faint ghost image or a patch that is a different brightness from its surroundings. It is permanent. Lowering brightness and using Auto-Lock slows it down, but it cannot be reversed.
6. Liquid under the screen
Water or other liquid that gets behind the display can leave cloudy or bright areas as it spreads between the layers, often alongside flicker or dim patches. Liquid damage gets worse with time because of corrosion, so if a bright patch showed up after the phone got wet, treat it as water damage first. See our iPhone water damage repair in Eagan page.
7. A low-quality replacement screen or debris from a previous repair
If the bright spot appeared soon after a screen replacement, the cause may be a speck of dust trapped under the display, a pinched film, or a cheap aftermarket LCD with a weak backlight layer. A good repair shop will check this and fix it under warranty.
6 Quick Checks You Can Do at Home
These take five minutes and tell you whether you are dealing with a real hardware problem:
- Take a screenshot. Press Side button + Volume Up, then open the screenshot on another phone or computer. If the bright spot is not in the screenshot, the problem is in the display hardware. If it is in the screenshot, it is something on the screen itself (an app, a setting or AssistiveTouch).
- Turn off AssistiveTouch. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and switch it off. If a floating circle disappears, that was your “spot.”
- Take off the case and screen protector. Clean the glass with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Dust, trapped air or a cracked protector can look like a bright patch.
- Test on plain colors. View a full-screen black, gray and white image at full brightness. Pressure bright spots stand out on black and gray. Burn-in stands out on gray. A stuck pixel stands out on black as a sharp colored dot.
- Restart and update. A restart and the latest iOS update will not fix a hardware spot, but they rule out rare display glitches.
- Check for swelling. Lay the phone flat on a table and press gently on each corner. If it rocks, or you see a gap between the screen and the frame, stop charging it and bring it in.
Please do not press or “massage” the spot. Pressing harder can spread the dent, crack the LCD or, on a swollen battery, puncture it.
Can You Fix a Bright Spot Without Replacing the Screen?
Honestly, no, not a true pressure bright spot. The dented films are part of the sealed display assembly, and there is no way to flatten them from the outside. Online tips like pressing the spot, pixel-fixer videos or “system repair” apps only help with the look-alikes above: a stuck pixel (sometimes), a software overlay, or a dirty protector.
What you can do is decide whether it bothers you. A small bright spot on an LCD iPhone does not spread quickly and does not hurt the phone. Plenty of people live with one for months. If it is growing, you notice it every day, or it came with other symptoms (touch problems, lines, flicker, a lifting screen), replacement is the right call.
Is a Bright Spot Dangerous? Will It Spread?
A pressure bright spot on its own is not dangerous. It is cosmetic, and it usually stays about the same size unless the phone takes more pressure. Three situations are different:
- It came with a lifting screen or bulging back. That points to a swollen battery. Stop charging the phone and have the battery replaced promptly. Our iPhone battery replacement in Eagan is usually done while you wait.
- It is spreading, flickering or turning into lines. That usually means the display itself is failing and can go black without warning. Back up your iPhone now.
- It showed up after water exposure. Corrosion keeps working inside the phone, so get it checked soon.

How to Prevent Bright Spots
- Keep your iPhone out of back pockets, especially when you sit or drive.
- Use a case with a raised lip around the screen, and carry the phone in its own bag pocket, away from keys and chargers.
- Do not leave it on a dashboard or charge it under a pillow or blanket.
- Replace an aging battery before it swells. Batteries below about 80% maximum capacity are worth checking.
- On OLED models, use Auto-Lock and Auto-Brightness, and avoid leaving the same bright screen on for hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a bright spot on my iPhone screen go away on its own?
No. A pressure bright spot is a physical dent in the films behind the LCD, so it does not fade or heal. It usually stays the same size unless the phone takes more pressure. The only lasting fix is a new screen.
Can a software update or restart fix a bright spot?
Not a true bright spot. A restart or iOS update only helps if the “spot” is a software overlay such as AssistiveTouch or a rare display glitch. Take a screenshot: if the spot is not in the screenshot, it is hardware.
Is a bright spot the same as a dead or stuck pixel?
No. A bright spot is a soft, blurry glowing patch caused by the backlight. A stuck pixel is a single sharp dot frozen on one color, and a dead pixel is a single dot that stays black. Stuck pixels sometimes clear on their own; bright spots do not.
Does Apple fix bright spots for free?
If the iPhone is under Apple’s one-year limited warranty and shows no physical or liquid damage, Apple may treat it as a defect. Pressure or drop damage counts as accidental damage, which is covered by AppleCare+ with a service fee. Out of warranty, you pay the full screen price.
How much does it cost to fix a bright spot on an iPhone in Eagan?
At Helpertech in Eagan, iPhone screen replacement ranges from about $120 to $140 for an iPhone 11 up to $280 to $365 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max, with a 90-day warranty. The check is free.
Can a swollen battery cause a bright spot?
Yes. A swelling battery pushes the display up from behind and can create a bright spot, often with a screen that lifts away from the frame. Stop charging the phone and have the battery replaced.
